For 1-series pure aluminum materials (such as 1050, 1100) with high purity,they are slightly sensitive to moisture during long-term storage and should be placed in a dry and ventilated warehouse with a relative humidity below 50%. Use wooden pallets to elevate the products 10-15cm above the ground to avoid contact with ground moisture. For aluminum alloy materials (such as 3003, 3004) with better corrosion resistance, although they can tolerate slightly harsher environments, they should also avoid direct exposure to rain and snow when stored outdoors temporarily. Cover them with waterproof and breathable tarpaulins to prevent water accumulation on the surface, which is also applicable to other series of aluminum alloys.
In addition, products of different grades or surface treatments (e.g., embossed, polished) should be stacked separately with interlayer protective coatings to prevent scratches. Never place heavy objects on the surface to avoid permanent deformation.
Second line of defense: Cleaning to prevent secondary damage
For daily dust and light stains, use a clean soft cotton cloth or non-woven fabric to wipe directly, or rinse with clean water and dry with a towel immediately. For stubborn oil stains (such as fingerprints on decorative aluminum sheets), use a neutral detergent (such as diluted dish soap) to wipe gently. Avoid strong acids, alkalis or abrasive cleaning products (such as steel wool, scouring pads), which will corrode the surface or leave scratches.If there is salt fog or chemical residue, rinse with plenty of water immediately after cleaning to avoid the detergent and residues reacting with the aluminum alloy and causing pitting corrosion.
Third line of defense: Daily inspection
Regular inspections are a crucial part of proactive maintenance, focusing on surface condition and structural integrity. If scattered white oxide spots appear on the aluminum surface, they can be wiped with a cotton cloth dampened with a small amount of alcohol. If the oxide area is large, a professional anti-oxidation coating treatment should be applied promptly. For different series of aluminum alloys, it is necessary to check for specific corrosion signs corresponding to their alloy characteristics.
For sheet metal used in structural components (such as building envelopes and industrial platforms), check for cracks at joints and deformation at stress points. Any minor damage should be repaired immediately—small scratches can be smoothed with fine sandpaper first, then rust-preventive paint can be applied to prevent further corrosion.
